The Case Against Naming Ezekiel Emanuel to Lead the FDA

If you think Dr. Anthony Fauci is a controversial figure in the fight against COVID-19, you may not have seen anything yet. Politico—the Democrats’ favorite publication for leaking their future plans—just reported that President Joe Biden is seriously considering nominating bioethicist Ezekiel Emanuel to lead the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Ezekiel ‘Mandate’ Emanuel Strikes Again

If Ezekiel Emanuel thinks it is wise policy, the country’s preeminent bioethicist generally wants to mandate it. For example, he repeatedly called for mandatory national shutdowns. He has urged that all children be forced to have a flu shot every year. He also advocated that different levels of government impose vaccine mandates. He also believes that doctors should be required to perform abortions when asked, or find an abortionist for the patient if they have a conscientious objection. “Mandate” should be Emanuel’s middle name. California Insurance Commissioner Orders Health Insurance to Pay for Minors’ Transgender Mastectomies

I missed this when it happened in December, but it is worth noticing now. California’s Insurance Commissioner has decided that health-insurance companies must pay for the removal of the healthy breasts of biological minor girls with gender dysphoria, just as they would if the surgery was required for cancer or a serious injury. California Bill to Force M.D. Participation in Assisted Suicide

When activists successfully legalized assisted suicide in California, they persuaded the California Medical Association to shift from opposition to neutrality with the promise that no doctor would be forced to participate. But here’s the thing with assisted suicide: Such promises are made to be broken. Read More ›

Equality Act’s Attack on Religious Liberty, Medical Conscience

President Biden said during the campaign that he supported the Equality Act, which is being sold as a means of guaranteeing equality for LGBT people. But it does more than that. It would destroy medical conscience by removing existing protections that permit doctors and nurses to refuse participation in abortion, and it would gut the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. Science Journals Have Become Intensely Political

I have related here on several occasions how intensely political supposedly objective science and medical journals have become. The New England Journal of Medicine pushes progressive politics all of the time, as just one example. So does Science, which for example, has endorsed the “nature rights” movement. Nature joined the crowd too in publishing an hysterical jeremiad against President Trump by Jeff Tollefson, its D.C.-based reporter. But if you read the lengthy attack, its most bitter complaints are about intensely believed political and policy differences, not actual examples of Trump being somehow “anti-science.” For example, construes every Trump action on COVID in the most negative light possible. He also attacks Trump’s immigration policy. From, “How Trump Damaged Science–and Why It Could Take Decades to Recover”: Trump has also eroded Read More ›

Argentinian Doctor Sentenced to Prison for Refusing to Terminate Pregnancy

In Sweden, midwives can be fired and deemed unemployable for refusing abortion. In Ontario, Canada, doctors can face professional discipline for refusing to administer (or refer for) euthanasia. Ditto to refusing an abortion in Victoria, Australia. In California, a Catholic hospital is being sued — with the explicit blessing of the courts — for refusing to allow a transgender hysterectomy. But now in Argentina, the right to obtain an abortion has been declared so fundamental that an objecting M.D. can be held criminally culpable for refusing to terminate a pregnancy. An Impossibility? That would seem to be a moral and legal impossibility. But Argentina just elevated the “medical conscience” controversy to a whole new level of concern — from the potential of not “only” having Read More ›
